Nourishing the Senses: The Magic of Kratom Infusions

The kratom plant is widely used in the United States, where it’s commonly consumed as an energy booster and for its reported mood-enhancing effects. It has been marketed as a natural treatment for opioid addiction and depression and as a way to increase physical endurance. But experts say there’s insufficient evidence for these claims and that more research is needed to better understand kratom.

Kratom is available as a powder, tablets, capsules and raw leaves (mostly dried) and as concentrated extracts in liquid form that contain varying amounts of ethanol. Most kratom products are recommended for consumption orally in doses of 3-5 grams, although individual tolerance varies. The energizing effects of kratom are said to promote feelings of vitality and wellbeing by enhancing certain neurotransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine, serotonin and dopamin, which have stimulant-like properties. The invigorating and euphoric effects usually begin within 10 minutes of consumption and last for one to one and a half hours. Users report enhanced work capacity, increased sociability and even heightened sexual desire. In some cases, hepatotoxicity exhibited by elevated liver enzymes (like alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase) has been noted in long-term use of kratom.

People who consume kratom often drink it as tea to help mitigate its bitter taste, which can be overwhelming for some. Adding a bit of honey, sugar or another sweetener to the tea can help mask the flavor. Other popular additions include lemon juice, agave nectar or other herbal sweeteners. Some people also use flavored syrups to create unique concoctions.

Traditionally prepared kratom tea does not have detectable levels of 7-hydroxymitragynine, the alkaloid that prompted the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to classify kratom as a Schedule 1 controlled substance alongside mitragynine. However, studies have shown that a small number of individuals who take high doses of kratom extracts may experience serious side effects like seizures, hallucinations and coma.

To make a cup of kratom tea, heat water until it’s hot but not boiling and steep the kratom leaves or powder in the mixture for about 30 minutes. Then, strain the liquid to remove any solid residue and enjoy your brew. If you’re new to kratom, it’s best to start with a smaller quantity and slowly build up to larger doses. Keep in mind that consuming kratom may cause side effects, such as agitation, tremors and stomach cramping. It’s important to eat a well-balanced diet and stay hydrated while using kratom. If you notice any side effects, discontinue use and contact a medical professional immediately.
